Permafrost Discovery Gateway is an online platform in development for creating, analyzing, and visualizing big geospatial permafrost products to enable knowledge-generation about the changing Arctic landscape. Its tools provide access to very high resolution satellite data products across the Arctic for researchers, educators, and the public at large to explore and discover.

On August 13, 2026, the Permafrost Discovery Gateway launched a new tool that allows users to explore lake drainage across the Arctic. For the first time ever, users can track lake drainage associated with ice-rich permafrost thaw in near-real time, and across the entire Arctic region. Land managers, Arctic researchers, and emergency preparedness personnel may find this tool particularly useful to identify risks to infrastructure and areas of rapid change.
