Woodwell Climate’s experts will be engaging with colleagues and policymakers on some of the key issues and top priorities at COP30:
A decade after the signing of the Paris Agreement, the urgency of the climate crisis demands even greater ambition on a global scale. As parties submit new and more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions, it is critical that the goals they set and the strategies they adopt be based on the best available evidence. That means accounting for not only emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation, but also from wildfires, permafrost thaw, and agriculture. Avoiding tipping points in natural systems must be a paramount priority.
Woodwell Climate is a global leader in monitoring and modeling land-based emissions, understanding their ramifications for global climate targets, and exploring innovative solutions, from fire management to agricultural practices. At COP30, we will be advocating for enhancing international frameworks for observation, monitoring, and reporting of emissions from ecosystems so that these important drivers of warming can be integrated into UN processes.
Keeping tropical forests standing is critical to achieving our climate targets, and the key is getting funding to the right people in the right places to benefit people, nature, and climate. Rigorous science is foundational to ensuring that we invest in nature-based climate solutions that are appropriate and effective.
Carbon markets and other innovative means of financing forest conservation are high-priority issues for COP30—and Woodwell Climate. The Brazil Presidency aims to advance the recently-launched Tropical Forests Forever Facility, and Woodwell is providing scientific input and technical advice. We are also working alongside partners in the VCM+ Coalition to shape equitable, high-integrity carbon markets, including methods for crediting nature-based climate solutions.
The impacts of climate change are no longer future risks, but present and escalating realities that require adaptation. Woodwell Climate is committed to expanding access to climate risk data and planning tools to enable the incorporation of climate risk into decision making. Through our Just Access risk assessment partnerships and climate-security case studies, we have not only provided direct support to numerous regions and communities, but also built a broader body of knowledge and best practices. We have leveraged this expertise in partnering with past COP Presidencies and the UNFCCC to identify barriers to risk-aware decision making at the national level, and to prepare officials for required reporting on adaptation efforts.
At COP30, countries are due to finalize their National Adaptation Plans and negotiators are slated to consider adopting 100 indicators to track global progress towards resilience—measures that Woodwell Climate supports and will work to enable.
