I support the Baywatchers program in collaboration with the Buzzards Bay Coalition. I work in the lab to process water samples collected from Buzzards Bay by local volunteers. These samples contribute to a long-term monitoring project that is helping us learn more about the Bay’s health and water quality, and guiding protection and restoration efforts.
During my undergraduate studies at Cornell University, I built a research background in freshwater ecology. For my senior thesis, I studied the rates and environmental drivers of carbon burial in natural ponds in New York State. I also spent a semester abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, where I studied Environmental Science of the Arctic and traveled on a study tour to Greenland. Experiencing the Arctic firsthand furthered my interest in studying climate change, and introduced me to new disciplines of climate science.
I’m glad to be doing research that guides us in reducing climate change’s harmful effects and developing meaningful, science-based solutions. This internship is part of a gap year I’m taking before I pursue graduate school, where I hope to study paleoclimate and Arctic science.
I’m from upstate New York, and I grew up working on my family’s Christmas tree farm. I also spent lots of time at my local science museum, which instilled in me a love of learning and grew my passion for science. My extended family lives on Cape Cod, and I’ve spent a lot of time there throughout my childhood. I am excited to learn more about the region’s water and contribute to research in a place that I love!
