I am investigating the interaction between boreal wildfire and permafrost, primarily in Alaska’s Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge.
Alongside boreal wildfire and permafrost experts at Woodwell Climate, I am studying how permafrost’s susceptibility to abrupt thaw is connected to the area’s history of wildfire, and exploring relationships between abrupt thaw features and landscape characteristics. My previous research was focused on the response of plant and animal communities and land ice in Greenland to warm periods in the past. My focus on high latitude regions is motivated by an interest in the sensitivity of these environments to climate change, and in the feedback mechanisms between the biosphere and cryosphere.
In my free time, I enjoy knitting, crocheting, hiking, and paddling.
